Want to build connections between co-workers and bring positive energy into the workplace? Think about creating a dog-friendly policy.
“Dogs in the workplace are a ‘growing phenomenon’ said Rebecca Johnson, director of the Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “People are realizing we need to do things to reduce stress in the workplace.”
To make it work a few ground rules can keep co-workers and canines co-existing peacefully. Pet Sitters International recommends keeping dogs on a leash unless they are in the employees’ office or cubicle and putting up baby gates so the animal can’t leave that area unsupervised. Also, you can create dog-free zones and have a back- up plan to take the pet home if arrangement isn’t working out.
Employees could get the additional health benefit of a brisk walk at lunch. Perhaps in the long term it could add up to weight loss, lower blood pressure, and lower medical bills for the company. A positive for everyone.
